When it comes to maintaining fire trucks, most people are familiar with routine engine maintenance, which is similar to that of ordinary vehicles. Therefore, this article focuses on the inspection and upkeep of other critical components in firefighting vehicles, especially those parts prone to wear and failure.

3

1. Chassis Maintenance

The chassis is one of the most vulnerable parts of a fire truck, as it carries not only the vehicle’s own weight but also a water tank weighing up to tens of tons. To ensure reliable performance on bumpy roads, in humid environments, and under heavy loads, frequent inspection and maintenance of the chassis and its accessories are essential.

1

Shock Absorbers

Oil leakage is often the first sign of shock absorber failure. If the ride becomes excessively bumpy or the braking distance increases while driving over rough terrain, the shock absorbers may be failing. Regular inspections are necessary. Damaged units should be replaced promptly to prevent further damage to related components.

Suspension Bushing (Rubber Mounts)

When these bushings wear out, the vehicle may exhibit issues such as misalignment, swaying, or poor handling. Thorough inspection of the suspension system can easily reveal damaged bushings, which should be replaced immediately.

Steering Rods

Loose steering rods present a major safety hazard. During routine maintenance, grip the rod and shake it with force—if it moves, the ball joint or rod assembly likely needs to be replaced.

Exhaust Pipe

The exhaust system is one of the most exposed parts beneath the truck and is prone to damage on rugged terrain. It should be checked regularly during service inspections.

Universal Joint Dust Boots

The dust boot protects the universal joint from dirt and helps retain lubricating grease. If the boot tears, grease will leak, leading to dry friction and rapid wear. Damaged dust boots must be replaced to protect the fire truck's drivetrain.

Tires

Most China fire trucks carry between 10–20 tons of water, placing a huge load on the tires. Tires must be inspected frequently and replaced periodically—even if they appear visually intact. Many rescue trucks and emergency vehicles see low usage, which may lead owners to assume the tires are still in good condition. However, rubber degrades over time. A tire that looks “perfectly fine” on the surface may have significantly reduced performance due to aging. This false assumption can lead to accidents.

2. Conclusion

A firefighter truck must be kept in optimal condition to respond effectively to emergencies. Regular inspection and preventive maintenance of the water tank fire truck, fire pump, seat design, door fire mechanisms, and accessories for firefighters are crucial for ensuring operational reliability.

Whether you are using ISUZU trucks for sale, HOWO truck, crane truck, or Japanese fire trucks, a solid maintenance program is essential.
